Perfect for that rare day when you’d rather play inside than out, Snow Bowl is Steamboat’s premier bowling alley. Along with open bowling, cosmic bowling and moonlight bowling, there are leagues during all four seasons, as well as tournaments held throughout the year. Strings in the Mountains Music Festival

A nationally recognized, award-winning music festival, Strings in the Mountains presents over 85 performances of chamber music, jazz, rock, country, bluegrass, world rhythms and many other genres every summer. Those looking for an exciting afternoon activity should check out Three Quarter Circles, an independent ranch with sporting clays and a driving range. Enjoy target practice from one of 12 log shooting platforms or test your new driver by hitting a bucket of balls at the range, where instruction is available from a seasoned golfer.

Rodeo

Take your family to see real-life cowboys riding bulls and bucking broncos at the Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series — the most successful weekly rodeo in the country. Performances, which take place on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the summer, begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Romick Arena at the Howelsen Hill Park Complex. Come early for good seats and delicious barbeque, and bring a jacket for when the sun goes down.

Rock Climbing

Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate or advanced climber, you’ll find what you’re looking for in Steamboat. Push your limits with top-rope, traditional and sport routes of varying difficulties, many right within the city limits. For beginners, local half-day and full-day guided climbs offer useful instruction as you scale rock faces 25 to 450 feet high. Advanced climbers can stop into a local sporting goods shop for a written guide listing some amazing climbs.

Museums

The Tread of Pioneers Museum offers an incredible glimpse into American history and the lives of Colorado pioneers. Housed in a 1908 Victorian home with turn-of-the-century furnishings, the museum features ranching and mining artifacts as well as displays of Native American cultural artifacts. The Western room has century-old firearms, and tells the stories of the rodeo, local outlaws and much more. An educational treat for the whole family.

Mountain Biking

With 50 miles of professionally designed and maintained trails on the Steamboat Ski Mountain alone, Steamboat is ideal for mountain bikers of all skill levels. At the mountain you can rent bikes and safety equipment then take the gondola up to Thunderhead for an exciting ride. Different trails are suitable for riders of varying skill and experience. In the surrounding areas, you can go for a casual ride or take a longer trip to explore local highlights such as Coulton Creek, Rabbit Ears or Buffalo Pass.

Head out for a day of fun and adventure in a kayak or on a stand-up paddleboard, one of the most thrilling ways to experience the mountains. Hunting

No matter the season, Steamboat offers outstanding opportunities for those who love the thrill of the hunt. Whether you prefer rifle or bow, you’re in for a great treat as you head out into the wonderful wilderness of Colorado High Country. Guides are available for fully guided and drop-camp hunts for many animals, including trophy elk, mountain lions, black bears, antelope, deer and game birds. After a successful hunt, local meat processing plants and taxidermy specialists will complete the package. Permits required.

Hot Springs & Pools

Natural springs surround the Steamboat area and make for a supremely relaxing day trip throughout the year. Old Town Hot Springs is a Steamboat institution, having operated year-round since 1935. The highlights are its three spring-fed hot mineral pools, where you can enjoy warm natural spring water throughout the year. There’s also an Olympic-size pool, 350-foot water slide, kiddie pool, weight room, tennis courts and other fun family activities in the recreation center. The Strawberry Park Hot Springs, just a short shuttle ride away, offer natural springs in an idyllic setting with massage, natural pools and the option to rent private areas overnight. Reservations are highly recommended to enjoy the ultimate private experience.

Hot Air Balloon Rides

There’s no better way to see the Yampa Valley and the mountains around Steamboat than to take a hot air balloon ride. You’ll feel free as a bird as you look out onto epic views of the mountains, forests and endless sky. If you’re lucky enough to visit Steamboat during Rainbow Weekend (usually held in July), you can see more than 40 balloons take to the skies. Balloon flights are offered by the hour and half-hour, and can be arranged for romantic getaways or family trips.

Experience Steamboat in true Western style: on horseback. Each course is open between April and October, and they’re all designed to highlight the abundant natural wonders only Steamboat can offer. Fishing

Fishing enthusiasts will love Steamboat’s abundant public and private waters, including the Yampa and Colorado Rivers, Stagecoach Reservoir and Steamboat Lake. No matter what you want to catch — trout and pike are popular — you can head out on your own or arrange an outing that includes transportation, fishing gear, flies and a professional guide. Half-day, full-day or multi-day trips are available for individuals and groups of various sizes. Unless fishing on private waters, a license is required and can be purchased from several places in and around town.

The grounds and gardens at Yampa River Botanic Park complement the majestic mountains all around Steamboat. Open dawn to dusk from spring until the first heavy snow, the park features picturesque ponds, native and non-native plants, and a variety of birds and butterflies that are sure to delight guests of all ages. On Thursdays, come for a morning walk and stay for a noontime concert as part of the Music on the Green series. Best of all, admission is free for everyone.

Boat Rental

Whether you’re looking to paddle, fish, waterski or wakeboard, renting a boat is a great way to spend a warm summer afternoon in Steamboat. Marinas at Steamboat Lake and Stagecoach Reservoir — both about 30 minutes from Steamboat — offer pontoon, fishing boat and canoe rentals for one to eight hours, as well as speedboat rentals. With beautiful Colorado views, both of these locations frequently have water temperatures of 70 degrees or more, making them the perfect place for the whole family to relax.

ATV/Four-Wheeling

There may not be a more thrilling way to see Steamboat than on the back of an ATV or four-wheeler. Enjoy incredible views of epic vistas and crystal-clear lakes as you tour Hahn’s Peak, the Mount Zirkel Wilderness and other great areas offering more than 44 miles of off-road trails.
